About Dr. Fan
Dr. Xiaoduo Fan is a board-certified psychiatrist, and a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is Director of the UMass Mind Clinical and Research Program. Prior to joining UMass, Dr. Fan was a staff psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School for seven years.
Dr. Fan received his medical degree from Peking University in Beijing and completed psychiatry residency training at the State University of New York. In addition, he earned a master’s degree in public health from Harvard University. and a master’s degree in clinical psychology from the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. Dr. Fan has received extensive training in pharmacological treatment, psychological assessment, psychotherapy, and public mental health intervention.
Dr. Fan has over 25 years of clinical experience in treating various mental health conditions – from interpersonal conflict, traumatic experience, stress management to depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Dr. Fan has seen patients from around the world for direct patient care and expert consultation. He also has served as a consultant on workplace mental health and culture-related mental health issues in legal cases.
In addition to clinical work, Dr. Fan has been actively involved in academic research focusing on innovative pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for serious mental illnesses such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, as well as mental health stigma in Asian American populations. Dr. Fan has published more than 120 research papers in major academic journals. He is also passionate about community education to improve mental health literacy and awareness.
In recognition of his significant contribution towards understanding the impact and importance of Asian cultural heritage in areas relevant to psychiatry, Dr. Fan received the Kun-Po Soo Award from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) in 2020 and was named one of the “Asian American Trailblazers in Psychiatry”. Dr. Fan is also a member of the APA Scientific Program Committee, a member of the APA Council on International Psychiatry and Global Health, and a Distinguished Fellow of the APA.
